Loose ends…

So I wasn’t sure I would actually post anything here after I “swallowed the anchor” and got back home.
There are a few things I think that should be included though.

John has posted a fantastic map of our trip on his blog. He had a pocket GPS with him that recorded our
location at noon everyday. He exported all the data into an application that let him generate a map. He
also has exported the data to Google Maps that allow you to zoom into every place we went.

This is, as they say, a COOL THING ™!

It is really odd being back home after all the time away. I am very happy to be back home with my family
and, now that it is warming up a bit (it snowed here last week!), I’m actually enjoying doing yard work
instead of deck wash and rust busting

However it is strange to be here where things are both totally familiar and yet slightly different. I imagine
it as being a bit like experiencing a parallel universe. Not sure how long that feeling will last but it’s still strange nearly 3 weeks from our arrival in Lunenberg.

Work is a good example, my office was almost identical to the way it was when I left, there was even the
same items on my to do list on the white board! However the economic situation is such that the company
has had to do some belt tightening so some of the consultants I used to work with are gone. Walking
around in the office leaves me with a similar “Temporal Shadow” feeling like I had in Martinique.

On the plus side they want me to do a “show and tell” on Thursday to give them a feel for how my trip
went which should be fun. So I get to spend the next few days going over my 3000 some odd pictures
trying to put this trip into a 45 minute slide show.

I may post more stuff here as I’m not sure I’m exactly finished with my Atlantic Passage just yet. Check
back every now and then and, as always…

The last day… Monday May 25,2009

Today was very busy, which figures given that it was my last day and all.
Had a nice breakfast at a little bakery/cafe up from the ship and then went aboard for the grand,
traditional, “Crew Photo”.

 Then we went aloft and loosed all sails so they could dry after yesterdays rain.

Once that was done we started unloading the ship’s “cargo” of tropical wood that will be used for two
new schooners that will be built at the Dory Shop here.

Once the smaller pieces were unloaded we spent about two hours rigging up heavy lines, tackles and
blocks so that we could swing the big pieces over the side.

After lunch we started to haul and heave and slowly maneuvered these massive chunks of wood. First we
had to pull each block forward from it’s position in the port breezeway until it was alongside the hatch.
Then we connected three different tackles and lines to it. There were two yard tackles one on the Fore
Yard and one on the Main and a heavy synthetic line run from the main topgallant mast down through a
block and then forward to the capstan on the foredeck.

There was complete silence enforced on deck so that commands could be clearly heard as we inched each
timber up to the level of the rail and then using the yard tackles and lots of pushing we swung each block
over the side and then down slowly into the water.

Once in the water the blocks were towed over to the Dory Shop using the rescue boat.

While we were doing this a scallop dragger on the other side of our dock was using a noisy diesel powered
crane to hoist bits and pieces of chain and stuff on and off their deck. The contrast was amazing
We then cleaned up the decks and furled the sails.

We mustered midships and the Captain thanked us for our hard work and discussed the “Sea Time”
documents that each of us received. These documents are legal documents that confirm the sea time and
duties we had on board the ship during it’s voyage. Each day and portion of a day at sea is counted and
recorded. In order to qualify for an official seamans designation you must have a minimum of 6 months of
sea time. For higher qualifications the requirements are longer so recording each day is important.

Then came the tough part for me… Saying Good Bye!

The last six months have been a fantastic adventure. At times exhilarating, frightening, awe inspiring,
boring, hot, cold, wet, head knocking, toe stubbing, arms aching, back breaking, calming, moving,
hilarious, sad and any other adjective you could think of frankly.

To have to say good bye to such great shipmates, friends, mentors and companions in adventure was really
tough.

This picture, taken by David on my camera as my daughter and I were climbing into the cab to head to the
airport, is of the ship reflected in the rear window of the cab… Sigh.

Ashore in Lunenberg May 24,09

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Today was the first day ashore since I returned to Grenada that wasn’t going to be followed shortly by
going back to the ship. That is a bit strange to me.

Last night the Dory Shop hosted a BBQ and party that went on to the wee hours :-)  The highlight for me
was the live entertainment. There were initially 2 fiddlers, a standing Bass player, a banjo player and a
mandolin player. Eventually they were joined by the fiddler that played at the party a year ago! The
resulting 4 hour jam session was fantastic!

The B&B that my daughter is staying at is very nice and quiet and my bed was soft and actually “big
enough to roll over in” :-)  I got a very nice relaxing and calm sleep, once I got back there about 3:00am
This morning after a fine breakfast of waffles, fresh fruit and coffee, I walked over to the ship and started
packing all my gear. I ended up using my new sea bag because it was bigger than my second duffel bag.
It was cloudy and rainy today, more typical of Lunenberg at this time of year I think.

This evening was the official end of the trip with an “awards” ceremony that started at 7:00pm at the Ice
House bar which is attached to the Fisheries Museum here.

John has created a 2 hour slide show of pictures from the whole trip which was really cool. The Captain
gave a speech and Bruce read out his carefuly collected statistics. Everything from from how far we
traveled, 17,756 nautical miles if I remember correctly, to how many sheets of toilet paper we used , a
number I have mercifully forgotten.

The “awards” were carefully setup for each person which was really neat. I got the award for the “most
sailor looking” of the crew. Heh.

Each member of the crew also received a print of a painting of the Picton castle done by William
Gilkerson.

Tomorrow at 9:00am there will be a group crew photo on the deck of the ship followed by getting the lines
and tackles rigged to move the wood from Grenada over the side.

My Daughter and I leave for Halifax to fly back to Calgary at 4:30pm tomorrow. Then the fun starts.

A “Salty Dog”

Nate,the assistant engineer, has a “Pea Jacket”, a heavy duffel coat, which Lynsey suggested I wear and
this shot was the result.

Arrival in Lunenberg May 23,09

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

I was woken up for my anchor watch at 7:00am this morning.

It was a beautiful sunny Nova Scotia spring morning. Bright Sun and calm crisp air.

We up anchored for the last time and motored out of the bay at La Have. Once outside we set all sails
and then motorsailed to the North towards Lunenberg.

As I write this we are approaching Battery Point and have had one cannon salute already

This will be my last post underway with the Atlantic passing under our keel and all sails set above.

Sigh.

P.S. We have arrived to a tumultuous welcome which included cannons and cheers and ships horns etc.
All of which we had to ignore while we took in sail, launched our boats and ran dock lines to tie up this
fine ship to the dock.

My daughter was waving from the pier head and I’m now safely ensconced in the Grand Banker
restaurant having dinner with her and David.

The Home Stretch, Bermuda to Lunenberg May 22 '09

This morning dawned bright and clear and cold!

After breakfast we hoisted the anchor and siled off the hook i9n a stiff westerly wind.

We had a fabulous sail NE up the coast of Nova Scotia, bright Sun and clear cold air.

About 4:00 we sailed into a deep bay just South of Lunenberg and anchored. We never even started the
engine “just in case” :-)

The weather is bright and very warm, surprisingly warm actually. For a while this afternoon David, Robert and I were working in the galley, digging into the nooks and crannies to clean and we were happy to be
there as it was warm. Now it is warmer outside than in!

We are planning to pass battery Point just outside Lunenberg at 2:00pm tomorrow. Lunenberg is 14 sea
miles (4 land miles) away.

I got a text message from my daughter saying she is almost in Lunenberg so I know she will be at the
dock.

So tomorrow this grand adventure will be over. We will be tied up to the land for the last time and
suddenly the “real world” will get it’s hooks into me again. And even though it will be great to be back
with my family again it is going to take some time to decompress from this amazing experience.

Had a great dinner of BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs and roast beef, stuffed potatoes and roasted pumpkin, very
yummy indeed.

The mood on board is very different from last night. We are a subdued lot tonight. I think the looming end
to the voyage is weighing on everyone this evening. Even though there are many people who will be
joining the ship for her summer voyage doing the East Coast Tall Ships festivals this crew will be split up.
The watches will be dissolved and only the memories and photos (and my blog too) will remain.
Tomorrow we will up anchor for the last time, set sail and head out into the Atlantic to head towards
Lunenberg Nova Scotia.

The Home Stretch, Bermuda to Lunenberg May 21 '09

Our night watch was cold but busy.

We arrived off the coast of Nova Scotia about 5:00am and then proceeded to weave our way through the
barricade of lobster pots into a bay South of Lunenberg, Port Mouton. We anchored snug up against the
Western shore. According to the Captain there is a high wind warning, near gale force from the West, for
tonight so we motored in and holed up to let it pass.

Our watch has been stood down till noon when all hands will turn to to do ships work. This will consist of
getting her all “beautified” for her triumphal return to Lunenberg on Saturday. Not sure what we will end
up doing tomorrow I think it depends on the winds.

The Sun was warm this afternoon. Warm enough in fact to work in T shirt and sandals! I thought that was
done for good :-)

I spent the afternoon painting the seizings on the main shrouds white, the shrouds are black.

After the deck was cleaned up we had a great roast beef dinner. Then once the dishes were done we
gathered on the welldeck for an impromptu “just us” party. After tomorrow we will be under the control
of the shore and we’ll have families and our shore lives tugging at us. Last night however it was just us,
dancing to Reggae, Celtic Rock, Classic Rock and lots of good vibes.

The gale blew as expected but it was a clear air gale, no clouds at all. Snug in this bay we hardly felt it.
Tomorrow we may set sail for a bay closer to Lunenberg. It will depend on the winds and weather as
always :-)

The Home Stretch, Bermuda to Lunenberg May 20 '09

Just finished breakfast after coming off our very cold night watch.

When we came on deck the sky was clear and sprinkled with brilliant stars. It looked very chilly which
didn’t help. I had first helm and 4th lookout. My trick at the helm was easy as the ship held her course
NxE beautifully. However since I just had to stand there in the wind I got quite chilled even dressed in
almost everything I have. That doesn’t bode well if it gets colder. Yeah, I can here you all saying “Poor
guy getting a taste of what we had for months” :-)

About 6:00am we braced the yards around and then set the fore and aft sails and lower topsails. By the
time that was done I was really warm! The Sun came up about then and the day dawned crisp and clear.
While I was on lookout a pod of dolphins came charging through the seas and took up station on our bow.
They look like they just love to play in the bow wave. It was fabulous to watch.

So I only have 5 more watches till the end of the trip. Rumour has it that we will anchor somewhere in
Nova Scotia on Friday and then sail into Lunenberg on Saturday.

As we were finishing breakfast the engine was shutdown and the on watch set more sail so we are sailing
for the first time in a few days.

Had a very busy afternoon watch.
We had another wire splicing workshop, this time with a “parcel and served” eye and thimble.
Parceling is wrapping cloth strips around the line then tarring it. Serving is to wrap marline tightly around
the parceling to protect it from chafe and this is also tarred to keep water out. All the standing rigging on
the ship is wire that has been parceled and served over it’s entire length. The Captain says that when they
were doing it the emptied every thrift store of sheets for miles around

After dinner we started taking in sail and were motoring again by the time we got off watch.

Rumour has it we may anchor tomorrow morning somewhere on the coast of Nova Scotia.

The Home Stretch, Bermuda to Lunenberg May 19 '09

Woke up to very different kind of day. The cold front moved in about 5:00 this morning and when I
came on deck to start my galley day the sky was leaden and so was the sea. the swell is now covered with
wind blown waves and white caps. the steady force 4 is blowing from the NW so we are still motoring
along.

It looks cold and miserable but the air is still warm and the water isn’t that cold yet so it is actually quite
pleasant on deck.

They took the galley stove apart to clean it this morning, which will hopefully help it actually heat stuff
again. This meant that breakfast was cold cereal, cheese, nuts and the last of our oranges. The stove is
back on currently so Donald is hoping to have a soup made for lunch. On the plus side there were no pots
or pans to wash from breakfast :-)

David tells me that we are 280 miles from Lunenberg.

Just finished the last of the dinner dishes and am now off till my night watch at 4:00am.

The skies are still cloudy and the seas still lumpy and steely grey. The air is rapidly cooling so I think it will
be long underwear and full foulies on watch tonight.

We just dumped our food slops overboard, which needs to be recorded in the “slops log”
so I got a position. We are at 40 degrees 34 minutes North and 64 degrees 18 minutes west at 7:00pm in
case you were interested :-)

I might even have to put my blanket on top of my sleeping bag tonight. What a difference a day makes
when you are motoring straight North.

The Home Stretch, Bermuda to Lunenberg May 18 '09

I was on lookout this morning as the Sun rose into an almost clear blue sky.

There is now a big swell coming from the West that is combining with the swell from the NE to make for a
very lumpy sea. The ship is much steadier but all of a sudden she will take about 3 big rolls as the waves
combine just right. Being on Lookout and looking back aft as she does that is pretty awe inspiring… So is
going aloft to loose the lower topsail which we had to do just at the break of the watch. The yards are
braced sharp on a port tack but even so the motion is quite something up above the deck. The worst part is
coming back down as leaning out to pass the futock shrouds when the ship rolls towards you means you
are literally horizontal above the sea! Cool and scary at the same time

There is nothing, other than the westerly swell to indicate anything is going to change but we’ll see.

Spent the day putting th finishing touches on my sea bag, I put an ey splice on on end of the lanyard and a
Mathew Walker stopper knot on the other.

I also read Fahrenheit 451 from cover to cover.

Our afternoon watch had a wire splicing workshop give by the Captain. This only confirmed for me that
wire splicing is not a skill I ever want to master :-)

During the course of our watch the water temperature dropped from 24C to 17C! Along with this
temperature drop the seas changed from blue to a chilly looking gray green. According to the Captain we
are in a “cold eddy” alongside the Gulf Stream. He expects the front to cross our position sometime
tonight or early tomorrow.

I have galley duty tomorrow so get to sleep in tonight which will be lovely!

The Home Stretch, Bermuda to Lunenberg May 17 '09

Had a good night watch.

When we came on watch the spanker had been taken in so when I was on helm the steering was much
more consistent than yesterday. The wind has backed around to NNW and dropped to force 3. The swells
are still running but they are smoother and the ship only does the big rolls every 4th or 5th wave now
We saw a pod of whales heading East off our stern and shortly thereafter Lynsey came charging back to
the wheel from the chart house and grabbing the wheel ordered hard right! There was a whale sleeping
directly in our path. It woke up and sounded just as we passed it within 20′ or so. You’ld think with all the
racket we make under power that it would have heard us coming before then.

Last night was brutal trying to sleep. I kept rolling across my bunk and there was something banging around that sounded like it was right by my head. About every 15 minutes I would get up and try to find it
only to fall asleep again when the noise stopped. Eventually I determined that it was John’s rig, ie his knife
and marlin spike, that was hanging on the divider between our bunks. I carefully reached in and unhooked
it without waking him up and I was good for a few hours :-)

I think the first item of business, once I’m finished this of course, is a nap.

Just got off of our afternoon watch which was very busy. We had a information session by the Captain
showing us some of the potentially ugly weather looming out there. Most of the day we motored through a
dead calm with a steady swell from the NE. It looks like we will be crossed by a cold front later tomorrow
which will bring strong winds from the SW that will then shift to the NE which will be rotten if we are in
the Gulf Stream by then. The Gulf Stream flows NE so the wind will be against the current which sets up a
very nasty wave pattern. There is also a gale moving NE up the approaching cold front that we may get a
chunk of tomorrow as well.

The Home Stretch, Bermuda to Lunenberg May 16 '09

Woke up this morning to a bright, sunny but cool day.

The winds are out of the North so the Captain says we will need to motor for the next few days. Blah! I
hope by the time we get closer we will be able to set sail.

We left the dock about 11:00am with a pilot aboard and motored out of the channel and into the open
Atlantic. Once the pilot was off we had a fire drill and then broke into our sea watches.

So we are off on the final leg of this journey back to Lunenberg, the ship’s home port. I still can’t really
get my head around the fact that my 6 months at sea are coming to an end.

On the plus side my youngest daughter is going to be waiting on the dock when we arrive, which will be
really cool! I hope the weather is nice so she doesn’t get wet and or frozen while waiting for us.

More later…

Just finished our afternoon watch. The wind is a strong force 4 from the NE with a heavy 6-8′ swell
coming in from the East. Definitely a lot of rockin and rolling.

My trick at helm was tough. We are motoring with the fore and aft sails set to get some advantage from
the wind and steady out the roll a bit. As the ship rolls her heading changes which changes the wind
pressure on the sails and causes her to round up or fall off from the course. To make matters worse the
wheel has recently been varnished and does not have th turks head lashing that marks the top most spoke.

Tricky.

The temperature is dropping as the Sun sets so I suspect it will be time for the boots and fowlie pants on
watch tonight. The skies are clear and the water is a very cold looking dark dark blue.
So day one of this 7 day passage is done, 6 to go :-)

St. George’s Bermuda May 13-15,09

This is a fascinating, but expensive, place.

Bermuda is celebrating their 400 year anniversary this year. Amazing to think that this island has been
continuously under British control since 1609. There are lots of buildings that date from that time as well.
The architecture here is quite different than the other islands we have been to. The buildings are massive
with smaller windows and heavy concrete(?) roofs. The roofs are whitewashed and have a unique
washboard pattern and gutters to collect rain water. The buildings are brightly painted or whitewashed
although the colours are a different tone than the colours down south.

Yesterday (the 14th) Nicko and I were on galley duty. It went pretty well we only had to cook lunch,
grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. YUM!. We went on a shopping trip to get supplies for dinner which
was a great beef and Guiness stew that Lynsey cooked up.

I guess my blog has attracted some attention :-)  as I was interviewed by Lisa Monforton of the Calgary
Herald for an article in the Travel section of the paper.

Today David, John and I are going to head across the island to the Maritime Museum which is at the old
Royal Dockyard. Should be interesting.
More later…

Just returned from our expedition to the Royal Dockyard and the Maritime Museum. We took a high
speed ferry from St George’s direct to the Dockyard and spent the day wandering around and looking at
the exhibits. The museum is built into the primary fort known a the Keep. There are a surprisingly large
number of forts and gun emplacements here, very reminiscent of Gibraltar actually.
After lunch we took a bus back to St Georges which took about 2 hours and went through the main city of
Hamilton. Bermuda is a very prosperous place! Hamilton is very busy and looks like it is booming.

So tomorrow morning we will leave Bermuda for our passage to Lunenberg. We will arrive there on
Saturday May 23rd sometime. Strange to think that in one week I will be back in Canada having crossed
the Atlantic and the Equator under sail “before the mast”. Hmmm…

Sailing to Bermuda May 12'09

Night watch was pretty busy. I had first lookout which meant tht I got to watch the sky change from black
with a bright 3/4 moon aft to full liht with the Sun climbing up from the edge of the world.

We are still motoring NNE but we have set our lower topsails and fore topmast staysail a the wind has
picked up from the West as we crossed through the high pressure area. We should arrive in Bermuda
tomorrow sometime.

More later…

We set all sails this afternoon and sailed until nearly 8:00pm when we took in and stowed them again. This
was an interesting exercise in the dark to be sure. In some ways working aloft in the dark is easier because
you can’t see how far up you are. On the otherhand you cant see what you are trying to hang onto either.

We are back motoring and the Captain expects us to arrive in Bermuda in the morning.

I completed my sea bag this afternoon after a a marathon 3 hour stitching session. It came out pretty good
actually and will be a useful carry all for all the stuff for my little dinghy.

Sailing to Bermuda May 11 '09

We are now motoring North. We took in all sail at the end of our watch this morning as we were only
sailing at just over 1 knot.

During our night watch there was just enough wind to keep the sails full, they were really beautiful in the
moonlight and the changing light of the dawn. Knowing that we are nearing the end of the trip gives every
dawn and dusk a new poignancy.

I never get tired of watching the sails. You’d think that after 6 months and thousands of miles of sailing
that they would loose their appeal but that is not the case.

Now we are motoring and will keep doing so for the next two days until we reach Bermuda. Word below
decks is that we will stay for 3 days then head out for Lunenberg on the last leg of the trip.

Just after noon we stopped and had a swim call!

It was flat calm, no wind at all and the water was an intense blue. I jumped in from the rail and felt like I
was falling up into the sky. The water was cooler than the Caribbean but not cold by any stretch. As we were swimming a bit of a swell came up and it looked like big blue crystal mountains looming up and passing under us. Fabulous.

Got the last grommet done on my sea bag and we had a workshop on attaching the bottom so I’m ready to
keep rolling over the next couple of days.

Sailing to Bermuda May 10 '09

Happy Mother’s Day to all you Mothers out there :-)

Our night watch was pretty relaxed the winds are now a steady Easterly Force 3 and we are still sailing
north under all sails at about 2 1/2 knots.

Ben has written a short skit for us to perform at the concert. I have two lines each of one sentence so
shouldn’t be a problem :-)

It is Sunday so Donald has the day off, as a change the galley crew decided to do a Breakfast Cafe called
“Chibblies”. They posted a short menu outside the galley and cooked breakfast to order for everyone! It
was awesome, the best breakfast I’ve had on the trip.

I had 4 eggs over hard, bacon, hashbrowns, two big pancakes and coffee. Yummmmy!

They were also cooking omelettes with cheese, mushrooms, tomato and ham.

It’s now 9:30 and they are still cooking more breakfast for anyone who wants seconds.
I think I’m going to have nap actually.

More later…

Had a brief snooze then took my proto sea bag up on to the hatch and worked on it in the Sun. It’s coming
along pretty well.

The concert was great there were six “acts” including our poor attempt at a skit   It was very
entertaining all in all.

We are still three days from Bermuda and the winds have been dropping so that we are now ghosting
along at about 2 knots. Apparently there is a big Gale blowing North of Bermuda which will hopefully
have moved off by the time we get there.

Sailing to Bermuda May 9 '09

Had a good night watch under clear skies and a brilliant full moon.

We have set the gaff topsail so we are now sailing with all sails set! We are making a good 5 knots. The
skies are mostly clear with some high puffy clouds. We crossed the Tropic of Cancer going North so we
are officially out of the tropics. The temperatures are dropping and it is now quite chilly on deck at night
without a jacket.

Spent the day working on my sea bag. It was a beautiful day bright sunshine, brilliant blue water and
steady Force 4 breeze. To top it off I was invited to eat with the Captain along with Nickola, Job, WT and
Meg. We had a very nice dinner and talked about classic rock music.

While I was on lookout today I spotted a couple of Man ‘O War jelly fish. They actually seem to be
sailing, they are moving across the wind which was quite surprising to me.

Tomorrow is Sunday and we will be having our Ship’s Concert in the afternoon. My watch is planning a
skit of some sort so I may not have to use my fall back plan :-)

Sailing to Bermuda May 8'09

Had a good night watch.

I had first helm and last lookout. Steering was good as the wind has slackened and steadied to a good
Force 4. Near the end of the watch we set the royals and flying jib.

I’m still amazed at how the colours of the ocean change at dawn and dusk. The range of colours from
black through grey and polished steel to brilliant blue over the course of an hour is very cool to see. That
is one of the reasons I like lookout on 4-8 as it is almost always during dusk or dawn.

We are now due East of Florida and there is lots of Sargasso weed streaming by on the surface of the sea.
There is still a big swell running but the ships motion is not so pronounced as it was. Still lots of flesh
toned patches in evidence on many of the crew :-)

As we came on for afternoon watch we had a workshop on making a sea bag. Unlike the ditty bag project
I think I will actually work on this one. Our watch was otherwise uneventful. We have all sails set except
the gaff topsail and are steering North by East.

Sailing to Bermuda May 7,09

Have galley today so actually got to sleep in a couple of hours extra.

We are sailing North under courses, topsails and t’gallants. The wind last night was a stiff Force 5 with
gusts to Force 6. This morning the wind has settled down to a steady Force 5. There is a 5-6′ swell coming
in from the North East which makes for a lot of rocking and rolling. The Sun is out and the seas are a bright
blue again.

We have the man ropes rigged along the main deck which makes going fore and aft a lot easier. Carrying
stuff from the galley is still a challenge though :-)

It’s nice to be back in the Atlantic again. Sailing in the Caribbean is fun with all the sail handling required
but there is nothing like the steady running of the ship in the wide ocean to get the blood stirring.

When we up anchored yesterday it was odd to think that it was the second last time that we would have to
do that. Potentially it could be the last time as rumour has it we will try to go alongside in Bermuda.

Hmmm… These last two passages will be filled with “last time for this or that” stuff. It is still odd to be
looking at the end of this trip in less than three weeks.

We will be having a ships concert on Sunday, everyone is supposed to do something. I have one really bad
idea as an emergency fall back in case nothing better comes along but otherwise I’m stumped. I hate
“talent show” like stuff.

Rainy day on Jost Van Dyke May 4,09

Yesterday I spent another very lazy day.

The highlight for me was spending 2 hours in a hammock outside Corsairs. Lovely.





The Internet we had been using during the morning died about mid afternoon so we walked over the hill back to White Bay and the Soggy Dollar Bar which had WiFi.

We headed back to Corsairs for dinner after sunset. As we were walking along the beach in the moonlight

I noticed a bright ring around the moon. It was very striking.

“Hmmmm, that means a change in the weather and not a good one either.” I thought and sure enough this morning we came on deck to grey lowering skies and heavy rain. It’s been raining all morning and is still coming down as I write this during the lunch hour. Lots of line slacking to do as the manila ropes shrink when they get wet. The longer the line the more it shrinks so lines like the Royal bunt lines, buntleaches and the braces need to be checked frequently. The lines can shrink enough to actually part or break bits of the gear so slacking lines is a regular rainy day chore.

Spent most of the day in the hold sorting old lines and lashing things down in preparation for our passage
to Bermuda.

The rain finally stopped around 3:30 and a watery sun came out just before sunset. There was quite a
lightening display off to the South where the thunderstorms along the weather front have shoved their tops
up over the horizon.

My anchor watch is at 4:00am so hopefully it won’t be raining again.

Tomorrow we will be moving to the island of Sandy Cay which is just offshore of Jost van Dyke and will
be our last Caribbean stop. the plan is to have a beach party ending to our time here before heading back
out into the Atlantic for Bermuda.

Lazy day on Jost Van Dyke May 2-3,09

Spent a very lazy day yesterday.

Went ashore on the 10:00 skiff and then wandered along the beach and up over the ridge and down to
another bay.

This was White Bay where the world famous “Soggy Dollar Bar” is. They also had the only available
WiFi signal. The bar gets its name from the lack of dock in the bay. Early cruisers would just swim ashore
and pay with whatever they had in their pockets.

The place was crawling with pale day trippers, charter yachts and bikini clad beauties… very pleasant
scenery indeed.:-)

After hanging around the beach in the shade of some coconut palms I wandered back over the hill to have
dinner at a restaurant called Corsairs, which today has WiFi go figure.

Looks like today is going to be another lazy one.

Tomorrow we will head over to a deserted island, Sandy Cay, nearby for a last bash in the Caribbean then
it’s “all hands to the windlass” to head North into the Atlantic Tuesday morning.

The passage to Bermuda will take 8-10 days and is the second last passage of the trip.
Much of the conversations on board now revolve around that nasty word “after”. Not sure I’m ready for
“after” just yet myself.

Busy workday May 1,09

Had a very busy day today.

I worked bending on a new inner jib out on the jib boom. The sails are held on by “robands” which are the
unraveled strands of a manilla rope. All the sails on the ship are held to their respective yards and the
metal hanks that hold the staysails to the stays by what is essentially twisted grass! It doesn’t look very
strong but in aggregate they can pull the entire ship in rain and sun, gale or calm.

I also helped the Engineer, Chris, test a firehose from the engine room, hung it up in the rigging to dry then
connected it back up in the engine room and flaked it back into it’s box.

We had a workshop on wire splicing and a swim call.

To top it off we had BBQ’ed ribs and chicken for dinner. Ahhhh lovely after a hard days work in the Sun.
Going to go ashore tomorrow to check out this famous bar called Foxy’s, owned by one of the premier
citizens of Jost Van Dyke. John tells me there is WiFi ashore as well so it’s all good :-)

Jost Van Dyke April 30,09

We arrived in Jost van Dyke this afternoon around 5:00pm.

This morning we started hoisting the anchor within minutes of getting back on board at 11:00am. We were
under full sail heading for Jost Van Dyke within 10 minutes of getting the anchor up. We were all hands
for the day doing some ship work with several people working on Mr Bones caulking and sealing the
planks. The plan is to launch this boat sometime while we are here.

Sailing through the Virgin islands looks very much like the Gulf Islands with lots of narrow channels and
lots of charter boats going every which way. The radio traffic from them is pretty entertaining. We heard
one the other night that is a good example. Lynsey heard this call to the Coast Guard requesting assistance
because, apparently, the boats engine failed and they couldn’t figure out how to turn around. They were “sailing” south with their jib set and couldn’t figure out how to go North! To add insult to injury they
threw their EPIRB overboard to attract attention. Sigh.

Paul was telling me about another call he heard where a charter boat called in requesting “more anchors”
since they were out for two days and needed some more…!?! Apparently they just dropped the line over
board in the morning when they left the anchorage and since the boat only had two they need some more
to keep going.

It should be interesting here as the ship is well known and gets a lot of attention from people.

I’m on watch Friday and off Saturday Sunday so will get a chance to check it out.

British Virgin Islands April 30,09

We arrived in BVI and anchored off Spanishtown on the island of Virgin Gorda (fat virgin).

Our arrival was pretty exciting. As we were sailing up towards the island the Canadian Barkentine
Caledonia was approaching the anchorage from the other direction. For us to get in we had to tack and
we did so just as Caledonia was motoring past. From where I was on the quarter deck it looked like we
were really close to them. The people on Caledonia were all taking pictures as we swung through the
wind directly abeam of them.

The island here is marked by very large granite boulders some 50′ or more in diameter all piled up along the waters edge. Apparently they were originally enclosed in a lava flow of some sort and once the softer lava eroded left them lying around on top of each other. We up anchored after clearing in and motored over to the National Park that covered the corner of the island and spent the afternoon climbing and scrambling around these giant balls of rock.

Then we up anchored again and motored back to anchor off Spanishtown again. Got a good workout
today :-)

After dinner I went ashore and spent the evening doing Internet stuff and chilling.

I’m in a little restaurant drinking coffee and waiting for my laundry to finish. We will be heading for Jost
Van Dyke around 11:00am this morning and we will be there for 4 days then it’s on to Bermuda which
should take 10 days or so.

I’m actually looking forward to another long passage, and this one will be the second last of the whole
trip.

These 6 months are nearly over and I have crossed a great ocean and passed through Neptune’s Court and
felt the power which is the Sea itself. So much beauty, hard work and fun. The next 20 days will be bitter
sweet as we head North back to the cold but also back to the warmth of our loved ones.

Sailing for BVI April 26-29,09

Our night watch was gusty and damp with a couple of big squalls as we passed the islands of Montserrat,
Nevis and St Kitts. The wind was gusting up to Force 6-7.

I had first helm and the ship steered beautifully only a few spokes to a full turn needed to keep her on
course. We are heading North by West (and 1/4 west to be exact) with topsails, t’gallants, foresail set plus
the outer and inner jibs, fore topmast staysail and main topmast staysail.

I hear a rumour that Jost Van Dyke may not have any Internet connectivity so not sure when you will get
to read this as the next stop is Bermuda about halfway back to Lunenberg.

Just got off the afternoon watch which was relatively uneventful. The wind is steady and the skies
basically clear and sunny with some high puffy white clouds.

Earlier this afternoon we changed course towards the high volcanic island of Saba and just as we were
getting ready to go on watch we entered the lee of this cliff girdled high island. There followed the alarm
and the call of “This is a drill man overboard port side”.

These drills are organized chaos but everybody knows pretty well where to be and what to do. Today’s
drill was a bit different because we were; A) under sail and B) the wind and sea conditions were gusty and
lumpy respectively. The drill went really well, the overboard object was in the rescue boat in 3 minutes!
The rescue boat itself was launched in about 1 minute. The requirement is that the recovery be done in 9
minutes.

Once we got all the equipment stowed we headed back on our course to the north now under a reduced
sail plan, no t’gallants, so we don’t arrive in the middle of the night.

We should arrive in the BVI tomorrow sometime, rumour has it we will be stopping for groceries at
another island in the BVI before going to Jost Van Dyke.

Sailing for BVI April 26-29,09

Lynsey and Nicki went ashore this morning and caught a ferry over to Terre de Haut to clear out.
I am on galley today so spent the morning doing the dishes and cleaning out the veggie lockers on the
Aloha deck.

Since we will soon be heading North where it is cold(er) we also were told to clean the ship inside
thoroughly. This is because as we get into colder climes moisture will condense inside the ship and if the
surfaces aren’t pretty clean they can begin to mildew and smell. Lovely…

We got our anchor up and began sailing North around 2:00pm. We have a strong force 5 breeze on our
Starboard quarter to move us along North. We are currently sailing briskly towards Guadeloupe wit all
sails but the Royals and Flying Jib set. I suspect that once in the lee of Guadeloupe we may need to motor
but the consensus on the lower deck is that we will only motor if we really have to. This would be just fine
with me I prefer to sail :-)

I went up to loose sail today and helped to loose the Mizzen Staysail as well. My hand is doing much
better and it felt good to go aloft again.

My tattoo is doing pretty well, it hasn’t been itchy and the colour hasn’t faded much even though I’ve
been in the bright Sun pretty much continuously since I got it. Some of the other people’s tattoos haven’t
fared so well. The finer lines have disappeared on some of them and others have faded a bit.

Current guess is that we will reach Jost van Dyke in about 2 days or so.

Sailing for BVI April 26-29,09

Our watch was on duty today, which was just as well as I suspect that everything ashore was closed if
yesterday is any indication.

First thing after breakfast we shifted the ship into the middle of the bay to give us a bit more swing room
as the winds have been variable making the ship swing almost 360 degrees!

Last night the on watch had taken in about 10ft of chain because our stern was only 20′ or so from the
rocks!

Surprisingly we had a normal Sunday, ie there was no official ships work, which made for a fairly relaxing
day.

I was safety lookout for several of the crew who went snorkeling along the cliffs that surround this little
bay we are in. The Sun was bright and there was a really strong wind blowing out in the channel between
the islands which brought some swell into the bay. The water is incredibly clear and you can see the
bottom from the taffrail.

This evening we had another fancy dress dinner which was fun. My anchor watch is 1:00am to 2:00am tonight and the plan is to hoist anchor as soon as we can tomorrow morning so we can get cleared out and underway to the British Virgin Isands which is 250 some miles to the North.

The trip should take 2-3 days.

Odd to think that Jost van Dyke in the BVI is the second last port of call before we get back to Lunenberg
and the end of my passage. Lots of sailing to come but the end is less than a month way.

A quick hop to Basse Terra Sat Apr 25,09

We were supposed to leave for BVI today but when the Captain went ashore to clear out there was
nobody around to do it. While we were waiting we worked on several small projects including the
Grenada Boat, now known as “Mr Bones”, and getting stuff in the hold lashed down ready for sea.
Just after lunch the Captain came back and announced that we would be shifting over to the largest island
in the Saints, Basse Terra, for the weekend then clear out on Monday.

Our watch was off today so David and I went ashore and had a quick look around. This is a very quiet
island! The town is very small with only a couple of bar/restaurants and a couple of souvenir shops and a
small grocery store. No ATM, or Wifi to be found :-)

Unfortunately in my rush to catch the skiff I forgot my camera so I don’t have any pictures of this quaint
little place.

We arrived jut as a funeral was being conducted so everything was shutdown completely. Just to add to
the atmosphere it poured rain, in those huge drops only a tropical rain squall can bring. I tried to shelter
under a tree but got soaked anyways, I also forgot my rain coat, blah.

Bill found a small hotel for the night which also had a restaurant so we were able to have a nice dinner,
which as an added bonus was pretty cheap.

The anchorage here is a bit dicey so we may have to move the ship in the morning.

Ashore on Ile des Saints Wed April 22,08

Went ashore on the first skiff run of the day.

After getting some Euros from the ATM David and I went to the hotel where Rick was staying. We then
rented some scooters for the day and tore off down the narrow roads to explore the island of Terre De
Haut.

Went up to Fort Napoleon which commands the heights above the town and harbour. The fort is pretty
well preserved and a good example of French forts from the mid 1800s. The museum there had a good
display on the Battle of the Saints between the British fleet under Rodney and the French fleet under
Bouganville. They had couple of nice ship models of vessels in the battle.

After the fort we decided to do a beach tour so we picked up a baguette, cheese and a bottle of cheap
wine and headed out to see the sands.

The beaches here are really small, with the exception of one they are all only a couple of hundred feet
long. But they are usually in nice coves so are fairly picturesque.

The weather was hot and sunny but there was a fairly strong Northerly wind blowing which made sitting
the shade quite pleasant.

Our watch is on tomorrow but we get Friday off so I think I will do a bunch of Internet and chilling for the
day :-)

Sailing for the Saints Apr 20-21,09

Had a fairly calm night watch.

We wore ship sometime before I came on watch and have been sailing to leeward of Guadalupe. I had
second lookout which was just at dawn as we approached the island. The sky slowly brightened and with a
this crescent moon low in the eastern sky it was beautiful to watch.

The Western side of Guadalupe is high, very much like Dominica and has a cap of clouds as well. As we
sailed into the lee the wind dropped and we started to take in sail preparatory to motoring when the wind
actually picked up again. We reset the foresail and mainsail and we are still ghosting along to the South.

If we end up motoring we should arrive at the Saints this afternoon.

We motored through the afternoon and got pasted with some really sstrong rain squalls as we passed
Guadalupe.

We arrive at the Iles des Saints around 3;00pm anchored in the little harbour and got cleared in without
too much fuss. Our watch is off this evening and tomorrow so we went ashore to check out the place. It is
like a little chunk of France very neat and tidy and pretty laid back.

I’m going with David and our new doctor Rick to rent some scooters to see the island tomorrow. I’ll fill
you all in on how it goes.

Sailing for the Saints Apr 20-21,09

This morning was really busy.

First thing after breakfast we hoisted aboard the dory and skiff. Then we got all the sails ready to set, fired
up the engine and hoisted the anchor. A little light exercise to start the day :-)

While we were doing that there were lots of yachts sailing by heading for the start line of the race.

We set our fore lower topsail and outer jib and backed around. Then, once facing the right way, we set all
sails and headed out just to leeward of the course. We could see many of the smaller boats racing along to
windward of us. There was a collision between two of them and one yacht was completely dismasted! An
expensive day for them.

As we approached the “mark” we hove to and watched the fun for 20 minutes or so.

As the big “J”s were coming up we tacked and headed back along the line so we got a really good look at
these magnificent thoroughbreds racing with spinnakers set. In fact we set our flying jib just as they were
setting their spinnakers   The two big schooners were there as well with their spinnakers set a well. Very
impressive.

The big French schooner was sailing with a replacement mainsail so they must have had a spare.

After they passed we tacked again, set all sails and are now heading South(ish) towards Guadalupe and Ile
des Saints which is part of Guadalupe.

Just got off of our afternoon watch.

We sailed close hauled on the port tack towards Guadalupe all afternoon.

As we were sailing Full N Bye my trick at the helm was fun :-)

As we approached Guadalupe it became apparent that we could not weather it and had to tack just after
dinner. We are no sailing North back towards Antigua and will tack in the morning some time and try to
get around the Eastern side of Guadalupe again.

Galley Day in Antigua Apr 19,09

Today Nico and I had galley duty and being Donald’s official day off we had to cook.
The key to that is planning, as Bruce and I found out on the crossing :-)

Once we had a plan for what to do for lunch and dinner it was just a matter of coordinating the timing
around the vagaries of our old diesel stove. For the record lunch was onion and tomato soup with bread
and jam and dinner was “bubble and squeak”, corn beef and cabbage, bacon and corn meal dumplings
quite yummy actually.

One advantage of being on galley is that you can stop to watch what’s happening around the ship. Which
today meant watching the fleet of beautiful classic yachts parade out of the harbour to get ready for
today’s racing. Like watching a parade of very expensive peacocks that.

Just as we were getting dinner ready the big French schooner came in with her mainsail torn in half. What
a mess! That one sail probably has almost as much area as all of ours together, or so it seems. Th noise it
made when it ripped must have been tremendous and frightening.

Tomorrow we plan to join the fleet for the racing, heh :-), at least until they go upwind then we will head
off to Ile de Saints which is an overnight sail apparently.

Racing on “Charm III” Sat Apr 18,09

Had a great day racing on board the Charm III captained by Richard West. We actually beat the one
schooner the skipper was most anxious to beat which was the Astor.

I have never been in a sailing race before so this was an interesting day.
The schooner Charm III is a staysail schooner, this means that instead of a gaff rigged foresil she has a
staysail on a boom. Above this she carries a Fisherman’s Staysail. The advantage of this rig is that it is
essentially self tending in tacks and is supposed to be marginally faster upwind. This schooner was
designed and built in 1923 so she is a bit older than the Picton Castle actually. She has the distinction of
having the oldest masts still afloat on their original hull :-)

She sails really well and ha a very friendly and fairly laid back crew. Which was good cause I’m not sure I
was all that useful a hand. Shackle and Sarah and I were the Picton Castle crew that were aboard for
today’s race.

We headed for the starting line about 9:30 this morning. We got the sails and lines sorted and ten tacked
back and forth waiting for our class to start.

One of the schooners in our class is called “When and If” I believe. Her owner planned to sail her around
the world when and if he had chance. He died before he could do it. His name was George Patton.
We crossed the starting line bang on time which was met with much rejoicing. This is not an easy thing to
do apparently.

The race was on a course that had two downwind legs and a couple of up wind slogs, very cool, lots of
room for tactical sailing.

On one of the downwind legs we set a massive sail called a “Gollywobbler” that fills the space between
the fore and main and is used as a downwind sail like a spinnaker. Setting this monster is quite a process.
We first had to douse the Fisherman, un shackle and stow it, then set the Golly and take in the staysail.
When we rounded the buoy we had to do the opposite.

During the race the giant “J” Class boats roared by. They sail like giant fish more than boats. They are
very impressive and they create quite a wind shadow as they go.

Watching all these classic yachts, gaff riggers, schooners of all sizes all churning along in the beautiful
tropical blue seas was wonderful.

The last leg is upwind and here the tactics get tricky. Our skipper elected to do a bunch of short tacks
really close to shore and this made all the difference. Although we got very close to shore at one point.

Once the race was done we motored into the dock and stowed away the sails. A couple of Gin and Tonics
to celebrate our victory and a nice lamb dinner prepared by one of the crew ended a fabulous day.

Ashore in Antigua Thur April 17,09

Had a very interesting day today.

I went ashore expecting to spend a quiet day surfing annd chilling while everybody else went racing. The
first half of the day went exactly like that but just about 11:30 John came by. He had rented a car the day
before and driven Spencer to the airport so he could go home. After a bit of Internet surfing we headed
out in his car, with blessed AC, and found a local bar for lunch which was wonderful and CHEAP!

Then we headed down to the shore near Rendezvous Bay and watched the all the boats racing. It was a
fabulous panorama of great sailing vessels like the “J” class sloops, schooners and ketches all the way
down to our brightly coloured brave little dinghy ” Sea Never Dry”.

After the race we went back to the harbour in Falmouth to meet our crewmates who were sailing on some
of these vessels.

I have been shanghaied into sailing on a staysail schooner named “Charmed III” which is an Alden
designed Malibar 5(?) ship. Deb, Bruce and Charlotte sailed on her today and it appears that I will be
sailing on her in the racing tomorrow.

Hmmm…

On Watch in Antigua Apr 16,09

We were on watch today so spent the day doing ship work.

In my case I spent the morning spot painting the breeze way overheads “tropical blue”. This was
interesting actually cause the last time I did this was April last year and it was rainy and cold!

I spent this afternoon sanding the starboard quarter deck rail in preparation for it being varnished. The day
was sunny and hot so the breeze through the bay was very welcome. While we were working a whole bunch of boats from small dragon class sloops to the giant “J” class racing yachts and several schooners
and ketches of various sizes sailed past heading out to sail in the strong alongshore breeze. Our dory with
it’s gaily colored gaff sail joined them and made a brave tiny splash of colour far out amongst the giants.

Once we were finished working we went for a sail in the dory, my first, and just as we passed the headland
out to sea and had gibed back into the harbour the tiller broke! A mad scramble ensued as we doused the
sail and shipped the oars to row back to the ship. An exciting end to the work day that :-)

Dinner tonight was really good. Gunner and Susie were on galley today and they cooked up a great meal
of Spaghetti Carbonara, green salad and mango cobbler. To make it special Lynsey ordered the watch to
“dress for dinner” so we all put on clean and fancy clothes and ate in the salon accompanied by wine and
ice water. The ipod was playing big bang music, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. Lovely.

Currently the watch is hanging on the welldeck listening to reggae and I’m chilling below typing with both
hands for the first time :-)

Ashore in Antigua Wed Apr 15,09

We had to move the ship closer to shore this morning so after breakfast it was hands to the windlass!
Once we were anchored again I went ashore on the first skiff and spent the day wandering around
Falmouth and Nelson’s Dockyard at English bay.

Today was the start of the Antigua Classic yacht Regatta and there are an amazing number of beautiful
classic yachts here. I have never seen so many schooners and ketches in one place before. There is even
one massive three masted staysail schooner from France that is almost as long as the Picton Castle! There
are also some very pretty smaller boats mostly ketches and cutters. The glare from the varnish was almost
blinding in the bright Sun :-)

Needless to say the place is swarming with people from all over the world. Most of whom are either very
“well heeled” or the paid crew for said well heeled people. Several of our crew managed to get on as
volunteer crew on several boats. There are a nice clutch of wooden sloops built on Carriacou some gaff
rigged as well as bermudian sloop rigged. They are noticeable mostly because they are painted using
ordinary paint. No fiberglass, varnish or brass anywhere. Doesn’t seem to hinder their sailing at all.
English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard (which is now an Antiguan National Park) was once the
equivalent of Halifax for the Royal Navy. The dockyard has been restored fairly well and has a lot of
plaques and information boards even though the buildings are now hotels, bars and concessions so you get
a good idea of how the place worked when Nelson was in charge (hence the name).
Tomorrow our watch is on and then we get the next two days off.

Sailing to Antigua Apr 14,09

Had a good night watch, pretty uneventful.

I had first lookout which was wonderful as the skies were pretty clear and the mostly full moon was
bright.

Last night at the change of watches around midnight they tacked ship. It was nice that they didn’t have to
wake us up   When we went on watch this morning we were again sailing North towards Antigua.
Paul caught two more Baracudas this morning, one of which he threw back because it was small.

We may arrive in Antigua later this afternoon.

We arrived in Antigua and anchored next to a very large yacht in Falmouth harbour at 6:00pm.
I’ll be off tomorrow so will have a chance to check out the lay of the land.
Many of the crew are looking forward to crewing on some of the classic boats in the races here. I’m
happy to be looking on I think

Sailing to Antigua April 13,09

Just got off our very wet night watch.

I woke up around 3:00am to the sound of heavy rain beating on the deck over my head. Just before we
came on watch the squall passed bringing with it a big wind shift. We came up on deck just as the order to
brace the yards around came. Nothing like starting a watch off with a bang :-)

A half hour later we braced them again as the winds returned to their pre squall direction.

About midway through our watch the skis opened up and I spent my lookout in the pouring rain.
By the time our watch ended the winds had dropped and shifted such that we were pointing directly at
Dominica. So we fired up the main engine and took in all sails and are now motoring North off the eastern
shore of Dominica. FWIW you can see the steam from the boiling lake, like a cloud stuck in the forest,
cool.

My hands are a mess, even my “good” one is a bit torn up. Callouses and water don’t mix.

Just got off a very busy watch.

We tacked this evening at around 5:00pm and it went very well.

Since then we have been sailing full and bye but in the wrong direction. That leads me to believe that we
will be tacking again. Possibly even later tonight which means we would be doing it in the dark. Fun fun
that!

One of the islands we have been sailing slowly past is Marie Gallant (?!?) this island is NE of Dominica
and is actually the edge of the Caribbean tectonic plate thrust up over the Atlantic plate. The volcanoes of
Dominica are the molten remains of the Atlantic plate melting as it descends. This is the classic plate edge
volcanic system but normally you can’t see the edge of the overriding plate so clearly.

I hope Eostre’s Hare was good to you all and you didn’t overdose on chocolate :-)

We had a busy day today.

This morning we cleaned up the ship, re-lashed all the stuff that had been unlashed over the last few days
so the on watches could paint the topsides. We also stowed a lot of stuff preparatory to getting underway
for Antigua.

We up anchored and motored away from Martinique at 3:30pm this afternoon. We kept motoring using
the fore and aft sails until we passed out of the lee of the island then took in the sails and motored North
East until around 6:00 when we set all sails.

The plan is to sail North towards Antigua on the Windward side of the islands. This will mean some tricky
steering as we will have to steer really close to the wind to make the Northing we need.
We finally had some luck with the fishing lines. We caught a Barracuda and a pretty big Marlin within a
half hour of each other.

Just as we were getting ready to go off watch at 8:00pm a big rain squall came in and thoroughly drenched
us before hitting us with strong wind gusts that necessitated taking in the flying jib in the pitch dark and
rain. A damp but effective way to get everyone back into sailor mode.

My tattoo looks good still, which is a relief frankly as I was afraid of a bout of “buyers remorse” this
morning :-)  There were lot of tattoos done while we were in Martinique something like 20!

The trip to Antigua will take a couple of days so we should get some good if tricky sailing.

Getting Inked in Martinique Apr 11,09

So after much consideration I have decided to get a tattoo.

I know Biz, my daughter, thought I should get one to mark the trip but I couldn’t decide on a pattern I’d
like to live with for the rest of my life :-)

The primary reason we are here in Martinique is to visit a tattoo artist that does Polynesian style tattoos
and is well known to the Picton Castle crew.

Many of the crew have got new tattoos, some small some very complex all beautiful and unique. Her style
is very light, which I like, not heavy and blocky like most tattoos I’ve seen.

John got a nice one on his calf you can see it here.

This is the place then to get it done, after crossing both the Atlantic ocean and the Equator I’ve an idea
that I think will work well, a combination of traditional and artistic. I’ll see what the artist thinks.

My appointment is at 2:00pm today and I’m sitting in the cafe drinking cafe ‘o lait listening to the
buzz/wine of the tattoo gun…

It’s later and I have a nice tattoo on my left forearm.

At least all the pain and healing itching will be on the same side :-)

Now the dilemma is to post pictures or surprise everyone when I get home?

St Pierre Martinique Apr 10,09

My galley day yesterday went by without a hitch.

Luckily Donald was cooking, boo yeah!, so we just had to stay ahead of the dishes. Keeping my freshly
bandaged hand dry was a challenge but a bright yellow rubber glove managed that :-)

This morning I came ashore on the first skiff run for a look around. Being Good Friday it was very quiet
but the museum was open. There were lots of before and after photos of the city in 1908. The most
powerful display to me was the huge bell from the cathedral. This inch thick bronze bell looks like a
squashed beer can! The force of the blast and the extreme heat simply mashed it flat as it fell from the
tower.

There are also examples of things found in the ruins as people began to build anew. Blocks of fused nails
and screws from a hardware store, melted coins and smashed ships portholes plus many ordinary things
made into macabre artifacts by the sheer power of the volcanoe.

Nicko and I wandered through the town and saw the ruins of the theater, a large church and the prison
where one of the only two survivors was in solitary confinement in a small cell deep inside the prison.
The ruins show the power of this event. There are great blocks of masonry piled up like they were
children’s blocks dumped out of a bucket.

The current town, built amongst the ruins, has made no attempt to hide it’s charred and blasted
predecessor. Many of the houses incorporate the walls directly, they are usually blackened bare stone and
mortar whereas the new walls are painted cinder block. The streets are the same as well, many with the
original cobbled surfaces.

All in all St Pierre is a fascinating, if slightly macabre place to see. Rising above it, to the North, is the
grey peaked Mt Pelee still rumbling a bit and being very carefully watched.

The crew has adopted a restaurant bar tattoo parlour called L’ Escapade which has WiFi even :-)

Unfortunately they closed at 3:00 this afternoon as did everything else in town. Apparently this weekend
will be very quiet so not sure what we’ll end up doing tomorrow as we also have it off.

Sailing to Martinique Wed April 8,09

This morning after breakfast and domestics we began the process of heaving up our anchor and the three
shots of chain hanging almost straight down from the hawse pipe. Pulling this up with the windlass was a lot harder than normal because we had to lift the whole kit ‘n kaboodle. Normally the chain is laying on
the bottom and we drag it along only lifting the part that goes up to the ship.

Once the anchor was up we motored away from the shore and set all sails as we got out of the lee of
Dominica. We were under sail by 11:20am.

We are now sailing along at about 5 knots headed south towards the French island of Martinique. I mostly
know this island for the destruction of the city of St Pierre by the volcanoe there. Many of the crew are
looking forward to this stop because they want to get a tattoo. I may do so as well but haven’t decided for
sure yet :-)

We will be in Martinique for at least 3 days probably 4.

Just finished cleaning up from dinner.

I had first helm on our afternoon watch. We were motorsailing towards Martinique and ran into a
rainstorm with gusty winds. I had my foulie jacket on but hadn’t done it up yet. I ended up standing my
trick at the helm with my jacket open. Luckily the rain was fairly warm :-)

We took in all sails around 5:30 and motored into the anchorage at St Pierre and dropped the starboard
hook. The Captain says the holding is not great here but the anchorage is fairly sheltered so we should be
OK.

St Pierre never really recovered after the eruption of 1908. From a population of 40,000 there are now
only 7,000. The current city is built inside the ruins of the old city. There is a good museum here which I
intend to check out.

I have looked at the picture taken the day after the eruption so many times that my mind overlays that
scene of utter desolation over the current lush green countryside. We are anchored near to the point where
the photo appears to have been taken so it’s almost like a temporal shadow. It is a very odd sensation.

Our watch is on tomorrow and I have galley so it will be a long day.

Boiling Lake Dominica Apr 7,09

Went on a great hike up into the mountains of Dominica today.

WT, Nicola, Susie, Nicko and I took a bus up to the mountain town of Laudat where we paid our $5.00 US
site fee then started our hike by Pitou Gorge.

Our objective was the Boiling Lake and the Valley of Desolation high up in the Morne Trois Pitons
National park. The trail is very good and fairly easy to follow but it is essentially a 6 mile stairway! The
valleys are very steep and covered in lush rainforest. The first part of the trail we climbed relatively
slowly under scattered showers and then we came to the top of a ridge and started a 2 mile up and down
that was a real workout.

Eventually we came to the top of a high ridge and looked down into the valley of desolation with the
steam from the boiling lake rising from the forest on the mountainside beyond it.

After a very steep scramble down into the valley we passed hotsprings and boiling pools with steam rising
straight into the sky. Everywhere there was sulphur coated rocks and bubbling hissing sulphurous steam.
In places the ground was hot and you could here the steam hissing and roaring beneath your feet. Very
cool.

The valley of desolation is indeed desolate the result of a massive phreatic (steam) explosion in the 1880s
sometime. There was a smaller one in 1997 as well.

From there we followed the hot streams down the valley a bit and then climbed up to the edge of the
Boiling lake. This lake is the largest of it’s kind in the world and is a very impressive example of the power
of the tectonic and volcanic forces beneath our feet. The lake is in the bottom of a perfect cylindrical pipe
maybe 300′ across. The center of the lake is in a constant state of roiling boil. It makes a steady rumble a
it does so.

Very impressive.

On our way back through the valley of desolation we stopped to look into many of the boiling pools and
steam vents and followed some of the sulphur mud flows. The guide of another party gave us a hard time
for “analysing” things without a permit?!? Apparently looking too closely at things is considered
“research” and needs a permit of some kind. Go figure.

Susie figures I must have looked like a geologist or somebody scientific. Who knew :-)

Of course every downhill we had done meant a subsequent uphill and vice verse. My knee which
occasionally gives me trouble when hiking was really sore by the time we got back to the Pitou Gorge.
Susie took off ahead on the way back and was down almost a half an hour before Nicko and I stumbled
out the forest. WT and Nickola followed us out maybe 15 minutes later. All safe and sound.

Tonight the Ruin Rock is putting on a BBQ for us so that’s where I will be heading once I get cleaned up.

Spent the day yesterday doing shipwork like sanding and painting, all of which can be done one handed
We also loosed all the square sails so they could dry. Unfortunately I couldn’t go aloft to help. Bruce did
however which was a first for him and I have a photo to prove it!



This morning we had to hoist the anchor and motor a little further out to give the anchor a better grip on
the steep side of this island. We are now anchored in about 100′ of water and almost the same distance
from the shore. Nothing like a little anchor work after breakfast to start the day off on the right foot!

I’m thinking of spending the day fairly quietly today and will join a bunch of people heading into the hills
tomorrow. We will be going to the boiling lake and the “valley of desolation” the most recently active area
of this volcanic island.

Dominica April 3,09

Woke up this morning with my hand throbbing. Blah!

Eric our Doctor arranged for a tour guide for the day so I went ashore on the early skiff after a hurried
breakfast. Once there we had a bit of time to kill so Eric bandaged my hand properly. At least this way it
might actually heal in a timely manner.

The tour was fantastic. Kurt, our driver, is actually the captain of the whale watching boat at the
Anchorage Hotel and has access to the hotel’s 4×4 so we were able to get up high in the mountains. The
roads on Dominica are very narrow, many are literally a single lane. Plus there is a lot of road construction
underway which means they are rough and muddy in places.

We went up to Freshwater Lake which is in the crater of an old volcanoe. Very nice high up in the rain
forest covered mountains. We also went to Trafalgar Falls which are beautiful. A quick side trip to Pitou
Gorge was interesting. That is the narrow channel part of Pirates II was filmed in, when they fell into the
gorge in the cages.

The landscape here is very much like the West Coast of Canada but with tropical foliage. In fact part of
the trip today was in deep V shaped river valleys very much like the area around Sandon near Kaslo B.C.
We went all the way across the island to the Carib Territory which is the last indigenous area in the
Caribbean.

After we got back to Roseau we had a great dinner of fish and chips and I’m now hanging out with Eric at
an apartment he rented here.

Dominica April 3,09

(Actually I think this was written on April 4th)

Spent the morning doing osfo and doing spot painting of the starboard bow topsides.

It was nice and cool, sitting on a plank suspended off the rail, as that was the shady side of the ship. This
afternoon we are going to be doing the same but on the port side which is facing the sun which will be
really hot.

The schooner Spirit of Massachusetts was anchored here. Her captain was 2nd mate on the third world
voyage of the Picton castle and came alongside for a visit. When she was leaving she sailed across our
bows and saluted with a shot from her cannon and a proper dipping of her ensign. We responded with a
good horn blast. Very cool.

David and I went ashore yesterday and wandered around the town of Roseau. The town is beautiful and
still pretty much as this area was 50 years ago. The buildings are mostly two story with the lower story
stone and the upper story wood.

The current crew hangout is a fabulous bar/restaurant called the Ruin Rock Cafe. It is built inside the
ruins of an old building and serves an amazing variety of flavoured rums that they make themselves. The
Guava was definitely “dangerously yummy” :-)  They also have things like coconut pineapple, ginger,
tamarind, lemon and other fruits as well as very exotic ones like snake and centipede ?!?.

I’m hoping to go on an around the island tour when we get ashore tomorrow.

It’s later and I have a very sore left hand. Blah.

I’m going to file the following under the “It seemed like a good idea at the time” file or maybe the “20/20
hindsight is a bitch” one.

After lunch I shifted the scaffold over to get at the last spot on the starboard bow. In doing so I tried to position it such that I could reach it from the rail. Well, as I tried to lower myself down I realized that the
plank was about a foot too low! Unfortunately I didn’t find this out until I was so far over the rail that I
couldn’t get back up!

Then I made my big mistake. I figured I would just hand over hand my way down the rope to the plank, it
was only 1 foot after all right? Wrong! The line was too thin to hang onto and before I could get both
hands onto it I slid down the rope, missed the plank and ended up hanging off the end! I also badly rope
burned my left hand, ripping most of my callouses off and giving myself second degree burns on my index
finger and the palm of my hand! Ouch.

So there I was hanging over the brilliant blue sea by my fingertips feeling like a right great goof. I tried to
climb back up onto the plank but because my weight was on the end it kept swinging away from the ships
side. I yelled “On deck!” and got an immediate response and then yelled “Help!”. There wasn’t anything
anyone could really do and in hindsight I should just have dropped into the drink to swim over to the
ladder. Ben and Susie were working alongside in the skiff and they came over to see if I could clamber
into it before letting go but I ended up swimming anyways.

To everybody’s credit nobody laughed, which was nice

David, helped me bandage my hand, fresh water rinsed my gear and hung it all up for me while I found
some dry clothes. Thanks David!

It’s a good thing I have a couple of days off to let the blisters break and get a start on the healing process.
Hauling on lines is going to be a pain for a while.

It’s also a good thing I mostly type with one finger :-)

We took in our sails and fired up the engine midway through our watch.

We arrived in Dominica at 9:30am this morning and am now anchored “stern to” just off shore The shore
is very steep here our stern, which is maybe 40′ from the shore, is in something like 20′ of water and our
bow is in more than 70′! We are waiting to get cleared in currently then I will be going ashore to check out
what there is to see.

Sailing for Dominica Mar 31,09

I can’t believe it’s nearly April already.

Well the nice weather didn’t last through our afternoon watch yesterday by 7:00pm it was squally and
raining pretty heavily. After we got off watch the ship really started to roll for a while but settled down by
the time I went on watch at 4:00am.

Our night watch was good. My helm trick was from 6:00 to 7:00am this morning just as the Sun was rising
above a bank of clouds in the East. We are sailing “Full and By” trying to head as close to South as we
can get. I always have trouble sailing that way because I tend to over steer a bit when correcting which
causes us to fall off farther than we need to. Also today we didn’t have the royals set so we have to use
the leach of the T’gallant to determine our closest windward course. It is more sensitive to the rolling of
the ship which mimics the luffing which means we are as close as we can get to the wind. I think I did OK
as I managed to keep the course close to SSE on average which was pretty good. If I do say so myself :-)

We are heading SExE under all sail, except for the Mizzen staysail and gaff topsail, and we may be able to
get to Dominica under sail alone.

We up anchored and sailed off the hook this morning and went from 8:00am muster to sailing under all
plain sail in about one and a half hours.

Just as we were preparing to get underway a small tanker came into the anchorage which made things a
bit crowded. We also had an inter island freighter anchored beside us. As the anchor came up we backed
the outer jib and set the fore lower topsail aback and we spun around on our heal quite nicely.

The winds have shifted around more to the East which means we will be heading into them going this way
as we were going into them coming North. The Captain says we should be able to sail most of the way
however which will be good.

Yesterday while I was ashore I spent some time reading up on Dominica. There are 9 volcanoes there many of which have been active in the last 10,000 years. Dominica is probably island that has the greatest
concern since it is overdue for a major eruption. My kind of place :-)  Since we will be there for about 10
days I hope to get a good look at some of it.

It’s mid afternoon and I go on watch in an hour or so.

The weather is fabulous with a steady Force 4 wind blowing from the East and we are sailing “Full and
By” as close to South as we can get. The water is an amazingly luminous blue to windward. I noticed on
the way North that it changed from the green that was common around Grenada to blue. Going this way
the bright Sun in the almost cloudless blue sky is making the seas practically glow to windward of us. I’m
continually amazed at the range of colours that the surface of the sea assumes. Sometimes it depends on
the weather or the depth of the sea but other times there doesn’t seem to be anything obviously different
from the day before but the sea is definitely a different colour. Today is one of those days. Beautiful!

Road Bay Anguilla Mar 26-29,09

So it is Saturday March 28th and our watch is working today.

Yesterday and Thursday evening we were ashore.

I went to the opening party of the Moonsplash Reggae Festival which was cool, but expensive.
Our watch was the vanguard of the “Picton Castle Landing Party” and as such was charged with acquiring
the requisite provisions and billeting. Lynnsey found a guest house apartment which was big enough for
the invasion to proceed. I slept on the tile floor that night with the bath mat under me and the towel from
the bathroom as a blanket. Surprisingly the biggest problem wasn’t the hard floor but the cold from the
constant breeze of the ceiling fans.

On Friday morning I got up had an awesome breakfast of bacon and eggs cooked by Geoff, watched the
Great Lobowski (sic) on Ben’s laptop then headed out to find Internet and see what the day would bring.
I met up with the ship’s doctor Eric and David and we decided to go an check out the local Rum company.
They had free samples   but their prices were basically retail. Then we took a cab tour of the island :-)
which was pretty cool. We went to Shoal Beach which has been rated as one of the best beaches in the
area and I can see why. The beach is busy but very clean, bright white with the water an intense blue with
brilliant breaking white rollers out on the reef.

In the evening we had a fabulous dinner at a small beach restaurant then headed back to the ship on the
9:00 skiff.

Today I’ve been sanding and varnishing the main and fore fife rails.

Not sure what I’m going to do with my day ashore tomorrow. Being Sunday it will probably be pretty
quiet. Just have to find a shady spot with WiFi and some good rum punches and chill for the day. We will
be sailing for Dominica on Monday morning.

We really earned our breakfast today!

About halfway through our night watch. The wind was a gusty force 5, the gusts were up to force 6
apparently,and we were sailing “Full and By” as close to the wind as we could go. We took in all sail and
then had to go aloft and stow it as well. While we were stowing the mainsail the Sun came up behind the
island of Saba which we were passing at the time. The Sun cast a shadow of Nick SA, David and I on the
Main Topmast Staysail. We looked a surprisingly salty trio wrestling with the heavy sail as it flogged a bit
in its gear. :-)

The 8-12 watch had some excitement as well, about 3:00am the sheet on the flying jib parted with what
sounded like a gunshot. I woke up in my bunk to the roaring and deep bass rumbling of the flying jib as it
flogged madly. The watch rushed to take it in before it totally shredded itself or wrenched the jib boom
awry. I was glad to still have 45 minutes before I had to be on deck!

We are now motoring into fairly heavy seas and a steady Force 5 wind from the NNE trying to make
Anguilla by early afternoon.

Arrived in Anguilla around 3:30 this afternoon.

Anchored and headed ashore for the evening.

Believe it or not I am sitting in the Reggae Festival called Moonsplash and thought I would see if there
was Internet and surprise there was!

Should be a cool evening mon :-)
